Metro Link Reaches One Year Anniversary
Metro Link, Kalamazoo’s flexible on-demand public transit service, is celebrating its one-year anniversary this month, marking a major milestone in Metro’s innovative approach to enhancing efficient and inclusive transportation options.
Launched in partnership between Metro and TransitTech provider Via, Metro Link has provided 45,000 rides since its launch in April 2024. As a result of its popularity, Metro secured further funding through a competitive Michigan Department of Transportation grant to increase Metro Link service zones in January.
Metro Link uses Via’s advanced technology to group riders heading in the same direction into shared rides, reducing wait times while keeping the service affordable and efficient.
The $1.50 or less shared-ride service provides affordable and convenient community access both within the microtransit zones and in making connections to the Metro bus network. Convenient for commuting to work, appointments, shopping, and more, it combines the stability of traditional public transportation with flexible, on-demand service to accommodate modern life. Riders can book a ride through the Metro Link – Kalamazoo app (available in the App Store and Google Play) or by calling 269-388-6373.
Key highlights from Metro Link’s first year:
- Over 45,000 rides provided to date, with ridership continuing to grow month over month
- About one-third of riders report regularly using Metro Link to connect with other forms of local public transit
- Riders take an average of six trips per week, showing strong community loyalty and reliance
- Riders give Metro Link an average rating of 4.9 out of 5, with 96% of trips rated 5 stars
- 96% of riders said they would be disappointed if the service were discontinued
A recent survey of riders found that many people rely on Metro Link to reach the places that matter most:
- “I use this service not just to get directly to the store but to get to the closest bus stops from me, which are all over a half mile away. When you’re disabled using a walker and there’s no sidewalks, sometimes that mile to get to the stop and back is too much.”
- “This service has been invaluable to me being an older disabled man.”
- “This is a time saver and allows me to go places I normally wouldn’t be able to.”
“Metro Link has been an important addition to our public transit services,” said Metro Executive Director Sean McBride. “This program makes it easier for people to move freely throughout the region and access the opportunities that matter most, whether that’s work, school, healthcare, or shopping. As we celebrate one year of this service’s success, we look forward to increasing its impact by further integrating it into our overall public transit offerings.”
