Metro Issues a Response to the January 23rd Shooting

Metro issued a statement to the press yesterday in response to a violent incident that occurred between two individuals on January 23rd, 2025:

“A shooting occurred this morning at the Kalamazoo Transportation Center. The situation was quickly addressed, and Metro appreciates the swift response from Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) officers and Metro’s on-site security contractor Charlesbrook Protection Services.  Metro is supporting the KDPS investigation of this incident.

According to KDPS, the incident does not appear to be random but involved two individuals who are known to each other.  One person was shot and is receiving medical attention.  No other passengers, employees, or members of the public were harmed during this unfortunate event.

‘I’m disappointed that a dispute between two individuals escalated to gun violence and impacted the travel of our many bus and train passengers,’ said Metro Executive Director Sean McBride. ‘The safety of passengers, employees, and the public is Metro’s top priority.  Metro has long-standing partnerships with law enforcement agencies such as the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, and the Transportation Security Administration, having worked with these agencies to conduct training, drills, and safety assessments for many years.  Metro continues to prioritize safety across our entire transit system.’

Operations at the Kalamazoo Transportation Center quickly returned to normal. All Metro bus, Amtrak, Greyhound, and Indian Trails services are operating as scheduled.”
